why you should consider a town hall wedding..
When it comes to planning a wedding, many couples dream of extravagant venues, picturesque landscapes, and fairytale-like settings. However, there is something undeniably charming and practical about opting for a wedding at a town hall. Let's explore some of the benefits of choosing a town hall as your wedding venue.
1. Affordability: One of the most attractive benefits of hosting your wedding at a town hall is cost-effectiveness. Wedding budgets can quickly spiral out of control with the rising costs of traditional venues. However, town hall weddings often provide a more affordable alternative without compromising on the elegance and significance of the occasion. The rental fees for town halls are usually much lower than those of grand manor houses or exclusive resorts, allowing you to allocate more funds to other elements of your special day.
2. Intimate Setting: Town halls provide an intimate setting that allows you to focus on what truly matters: celebrating your love and commitment. With their cosy ambience, town halls offer a warm atmosphere that can make your guests feel right at home. These venues are perfect for couples who prefer a smaller, more personal gathering to share joy with their closest family and friends. The intimacy of a town hall creates an atmosphere of togetherness and shared experiences that are difficult to replicate in larger spaces.
3. Convenience: Another advantage of choosing a town hall for your wedding is its convenience. Many town halls have dedicated wedding coordinators or event planners who are experienced in hosting weddings and can help you with the logistical aspects of your big day. You can often find all the necessary amenities in one place, including ceremony and reception spaces, ample parking, and even catering services. This convenience saves you time and effort; you won't have to travel between different locations or coordinate with multiple vendors.
4. Historical Charm: Town halls often boast a rich history and architectural beauty, adding a touch of timeless charm to your wedding day. These buildings are often located in the heart of town centres, providing a unique backdrop for your special day. Whether you opt for a traditional or modern ceremony, the historical features of a town hall can lend an air of sophistication and elegance to your wedding celebration. Your photographer will have an array of beautiful backdrops to capture unforgettable moments.
5. Personalization: While town halls may not have the same opulence as high-end venues, they offer couples the opportunity to exercise their creativity and personalize their wedding day. These blank canvas venues allow you to style the space according to your unique vision, from the floral arrangements to the table settings, ensuring that every aspect of your wedding reflects your personality and style. Whether you prefer a minimalist, rustic, or contemporary theme, a town hall can transform into the perfect setting for your dream wedding.
In conclusion, opting for a wedding at a town hall offers numerous advantages that go beyond the stereotypical wedding expectations. From cost-effectiveness to convenience and intimacy, a town hall wedding can provide an enchanting and memorable experience for both the couple and their guests. So, consider the possibilities and explore the benefits that a town hall wedding can bring to your special day.

how much does it cost to hire a wedding photographer?
When it comes to hiring a wedding photographer, the cost can vary depending on various factors. The price varies depending on the photographer's experience, reputation, package inclusions, and additional services such as engagement shoots or wedding albums. It's essential to consider your budget and needs when selecting a wedding photographer, as they play a crucial role in capturing those precious moments of your special day that will last a lifetime.
Why do Wedding Photographers' Costs Vary?
When it comes to planning a wedding, one of the most important decisions couples make is choosing a wedding photographer. However, the cost of hiring a wedding photographer can vary significantly, leaving couples wondering why there is such a wide range in pricing. Several factors contribute to the variation in wedding photographers' costs, and understanding them can help couples make informed decisions when selecting a photographer for their special day.
Experience and Expertise
One of the primary factors affecting the cost of a wedding photographer is their experience and expertise. Like any other profession, photographers' skills develop and improve over time. Seasoned photographers who have captured numerous weddings possess a wealth of knowledge and skills reflected in their pricing. Their expertise allows them to anticipate special moments and adapt to challenging lighting and environments, ensuring exceptional results.
Time and Effort
Wedding photography goes beyond capturing images on the wedding day itself. Skilled photographers invest significant time and effort both before and after the event. They spend time getting to know the couple, organizing pre-wedding shoots, attending rehearsals, and planning shot lists. After the wedding, they meticulously select and edit the best images, creating a final collection that tells the beautiful story of the couple's day. All these additional tasks require attention to detail and contribute to the overall cost.
Equipment and Technology
Another crucial aspect impacting a wedding photographer's pricing is the equipment and technology they use. Professional-grade cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, and editing software come with a substantial investment. Skilled photographers constantly upgrade their gear to stay up-to-date with the latest innovations, ensuring they can capture high-quality images even in challenging conditions. The cost of maintaining and replacing equipment is factored into their pricing.
Location and Travel
Wedding photographers' costs can also vary depending on their location and the distance they must travel to capture a couple's special day. If the couple wants a photographer who is not local to the area, additional expenses may be incurred for travel, accommodation, and transportation. These costs are often included in the package price or added as a separate fee.
Level of Service and Package Inclusions
Different wedding photographers offer a range of services and packages to suit various budgets and requirements. Basic packages might include coverage of the wedding ceremony and a set number of edited images, whereas higher-priced packages may include full-day coverage, additional photographers, albums, prints, and more. The level of service and package inclusions significantly affect the overall cost.
Market Demand and Reputation
Lastly, market demand and reputation play a role in the pricing of wedding photographers. Established and highly sought-after photographers often charge a premium due to their reputation and the high demand for their services. Couples who prioritize quality and are willing to invest in renowned photographers may find themselves paying a higher cost.
In conclusion, wedding photographers' costs vary due to a combination of factors such as experience, time, equipment, location, level of service, market demand, and reputation. Couples should carefully consider their budget, preferences, and the value they place on exceptional photography when selecting a wedding photographer. Investing in a skilled and reputable photographer ensures that those precious moments are captured beautifully, providing lasting memories for years to come.

should you hire someone that does both wedding photography and videography? (and why I can't do both!)
In the world of wedding celebrations, capturing precious moments is a vital aspect that couples prioritise. With technological advancements, wedding photography and videography have evolved into separate art forms, each bringing a unique perspective and storytelling element to the big day. However, when hiring someone who can seamlessly handle both roles, there are several factors to consider.
Pros of Hiring Someone for Both Photography and Videography:
1. Consistency in Style and Vision: By hiring an individual or team specialising in wedding photography and videography, you can expect a cohesive and harmonious result. They will deeply understand how to capture the perfect shot that complements the overall video. This consistency ensures that your wedding album and video will blend seamlessly, telling a comprehensive story in sync.
2. Singular Point of Contact: Working with a single person or team for both photography and videography means you only need to communicate with one vendor. This streamlines the planning process, reduces potential miscommunications, and alleviates the stress of dealing with multiple professionals. It allows for better coordination, as everyone is on the same page.
3. Cost-Effective Option: Opting for one provider who can fulfil both photography and videography needs may offer cost advantages. Hiring a separate photographer and videographer might require booking multiple professionals, equipment, and additional coordination fees. Bundling both services with one provider may save you money in the long run.
4. Efficient Timing and Coordination: With a single team or individual handling both photography and videography, they will be well-versed in timing and coordination. This enables them to work together seamlessly, capturing the right moments without conflicting with one another. As a result, there is less chance of missing important shots or disrupting the flow of the wedding day.
Cons of Hiring Someone for Both Photography and Videography:
1. Potential Lack of Specialization: While individuals or teams offering both photography and videography services may be skilled in both areas, it's important to consider the depth of their expertise. Specialization allows professionals to focus solely on their craft, honing their skills and staying updated with the latest techniques. By combining both roles, there is a possibility that they may not possess the same level of expertise as dedicated specialists.
2. Limited Focus during Critical Moments: Shooting both photos and videos simultaneously may require the photographer/videographer to divide their attention between capturing two different mediums. This may limit their focus and possibly compromise the quality of either the photography or videography. Important moments may be missed or not fully captured due to the demands of juggling both responsibilities.
3. Potential Fatigue or Overworking: Weddings are exhausting for professionals who specialize in just one role, so imagine the challenges of handling both photography and videography. The demands of managing multiple tasks simultaneously can be physically and mentally draining. The risk of burnout or compromised performance may be higher when one person is responsible for both roles.
4. Limited Backup or Coverage: In case of any unforeseen circumstances, such as illness or equipment failure, a solo provider handling both photography and videography may struggle to offer a reliable backup. This increases the risk of potential momentary lapses in coverage, leaving you with incomplete documentation of your special day.
Ultimately, the decision to hire someone for both wedding photography and videography comes down to personal preference and the importance you place on each aspect. It's crucial to carefully evaluate the skills, experience, and portfolio of potential professionals before making a final decision. Assess the pros and cons in light of your budget, expectations, and the vision you have for your wedding day memories.
Why I Do Not Do Wedding Videography:
As a dedicated wedding photographer, I have always been passionate about capturing fleeting moments of love, joy, and emotion through the lens of my camera. Over the years, I have witnessed the power of photography to evoke memories and bring couples back to the magical moments that marked the beginning of their lifelong journey together. Consequently, some may wonder why I do not offer wedding videography services alongside my photography expertise. Allow me to shed some light on my decision.
1. Focused Expertise
Photography and videography may seem similar at first glance, as both involve capturing visual memories of special occasions. However, they require different skills, equipment, and approaches. By specializing solely in wedding photography, I can devote my time, energy, and resources to perfecting my craft without any distractions. This allows me to offer the highest level of expertise and quality in my chosen field.
2. Immersive Stillness
Photography has a unique ability to freeze a moment in time, allowing couples to relive the emotions and memories associated with that moment whenever they desire. Still images can transport us back in time, transporting us to the happiness, laughter, and romance of the wedding day. I believe that this immersive stillness captures the essence of a wedding more authentically and evocatively than a moving image.
3. Unobtrusive Presence
During a wedding, couples want to enjoy their special day without feeling constantly aware of the camera's presence. As a photographer, I have mastered the art of being inconspicuous, blending seamlessly into the background to capture candid moments and genuine expressions. Videography, on the other hand, often requires a more intrusive approach, with cameras constantly in motion and videographers directing and staging shots. By focusing exclusively on photography, I can maintain my unobtrusive presence and ensure the couples are at ease throughout their special day.
4. Timeless Appeal
Photographs have an enduring quality that transcends the passage of time. A well-captured image can be treasured for years to come, passed down through generations as a tangible reminder of love and commitment. Wedding photographs have a timeless appeal that remains relevant even as trends come and go. Videography, on the other hand, might be subject to changes in technology and taste, potentially dating itself and detracting from the enduring beauty of the wedding day.
5. Personal Connection
Finally, my decision not to offer wedding videography services is also driven by my desire to forge a personal connection with the couples I work with. By focusing solely on photography, I can truly immerse myself in their love story, get to know their personalities and develop a rapport that allows me to capture their essence authentically. This deep connection enables me to translate their unique love into timeless photographs.
While wedding videography undoubtedly has its merits, I firmly believe that by specializing in photography, I can offer a more focused, immersive, and timeless experience for couples. Through my lens, I strive to capture the raw emotions, unscripted moments, and intimate details that make each wedding day special. It is this commitment to excellence that drives my decision not to offer wedding videography services.

should you print your wedding photos?
In this digital age, where everything seems to exist in pixels and screens, the art of printing photographs may appear outdated to some. However, when it comes to your wedding photos, printing them is a decision that can add a layer of significance and meaning to your cherished memories. Here are some compelling reasons why you should consider printing your wedding photos.
Tangible Memories: Printed photographs offer a tangible embodiment of your special day. Holding an actual photograph in your hands, feeling its texture, and admiring the details can evoke a unique emotional connection. In a world where digital files are easily forgotten in the depths of hard drives or lost to technological failures, printed photos become lasting reminders that you can cherish for years to come.
Preservation of Moments: Printing your wedding photos ensures their preservation for future generations. Imagine sharing a photo album with your children or grandchildren, flipping through the pages to relive the joy and love captured on your wedding day. Unlike digital files that may degrade or become obsolete over time, printed photographs have the potential to withstand the test of time, becoming heirlooms that can be passed down through generations.
Enhanced Display Options: Printing allows you to showcase your wedding photos in various creative ways. From elegantly framed prints adorning your walls to personalized wedding albums displayed on coffee tables, there are endless possibilities for displaying your photos. Every time you pass by a framed image or open your album, you will be transported back to the happiness and excitement of your wedding day.
Sharing the Experience: While sharing digital images with loved ones has become commonplace, there is something inherently special about physically sharing printed photographs. Sending personalized thank you cards with a printed photo or gifting a beautifully designed wedding album to your parents or close friends adds a personal touch to the sharing experience. Sharing printed photos fosters a sense of connection and allows others to appreciate the joy and beauty of your wedding day in a tangible way.
Unplugging and Savoring the Moment: In a world consumed by screens and constant distractions, printing your wedding photos allows you to unplug and savor the moment. By physically holding and interacting with printed photos, you can immerse yourself in the memories they capture, completely detached from the digital noise that often surrounds us. This immersive experience offers an opportunity for reflection, allowing you to appreciate the depth and significance of the moments captured in the photographs.
In conclusion, printing your wedding photos provides an invaluable investment in preserving and savoring your cherished memories. Beyond the convenience of digital storage, the beauty of holding tangible photographs and sharing them with loved ones cannot be understated. By printing your wedding photos, you are creating lasting reminders of your special day that can be cherished for a lifetime and beyond.

7 ways a wedding photographer can improve.
Being a wedding photographer is a constantly evolving journey. As trends change, technology advances and new techniques emerge, it becomes crucial for professionals to improve their skills continually. Here are a few ways in which a wedding photographer can enhance their abilities and stay ahead in the industry:
1. Continuous Learning
Photography is an art that demands a commitment to lifelong learning. A wedding photographer should actively seek opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills. This can be achieved by attending workshops, seminars, or online courses catering to wedding photography. These platforms allow photographers to learn from industry experts, discover new techniques, and gain insights into the latest trends.
2. Practice, Practice, Practice
Improvement comes with practice. By regularly practising their craft, wedding photographers can refine their skills and experiment with different techniques. They can organize styled shoots, collaborate with models, or even document personal projects to challenge themselves creatively. This not only helps in mastering various aspects of photography but also builds confidence and develops a unique style.
3. Seek Constructive Criticism
Feedback is vital in any profession, and wedding photography is no exception. Seeking constructive criticism from fellow photographers, mentors, or even clients can be immensely valuable in identifying areas for improvement. By being open to feedback, photographers can gain fresh perspectives and refine their techniques to deliver even better results.
4. Stay Updated with Industry Trends
The wedding photography industry constantly evolves, driven by changing styles, popular aesthetics, and emerging technology. Photographers must stay updated with the latest trends and incorporate them into their work. This can be accomplished by regularly browsing wedding blogs, following influential photographers on social media, and attending industry events. Staying in tune with trends helps photographers offer fresh and relevant services that meet the expectations of modern couples.
5. Networking and Collaboration
Networking with other professionals within the wedding industry can provide valuable growth opportunities. Collaborating with wedding planners, florists, makeup artists, and other vendors can not only expand a photographer's client base but also lead to cross-promotion and shared knowledge. Networking events, online forums, and social media platforms are great avenues for connecting with like-minded individuals and building mutually beneficial relationships.
6. Critique and Analyze Previous Work
Self-reflection is a powerful tool for improvement. By critically analyzing their previous work, wedding photographers can identify areas that need development. This can involve studying composition, lighting, posing, and storytelling within their images. With each new project, photographers can aim to rectify past mistakes and implement new techniques to enhance their future work.
7. Invest in Quality Equipment
While skill and technique are crucial, having the right tools is equally important. Investing in quality camera gear, lenses, and other essential equipment can significantly impact the outcome of a wedding photographer's work. Staying abreast of new technologies and advancements allows photographers to make informed decisions when upgrading their equipment, resulting in improved image quality and more versatility in capturing different moments.
In conclusion, improving as a wedding photographer involves a combination of continuous learning, practice, seeking feedback, staying updated, networking, self-reflection, and investing in quality equipment. By adopting these strategies, photographers can refine their skills, stay ahead of the curve, and deliver exceptional results that exceed their clients' expectations.

why does it take so long for a photographer to edit wedding photos?
Editing wedding photos is an incredibly meticulous and time-consuming task that demands the full attention of a skilled and experienced photographer. This process involves carefully evaluating each image’s composition, exposure, colour balance, and overall aesthetic appeal. Every tiny detail is scrutinized to ensure that the final result captures the essence of the couple's special day.
The photographer must also enhance the images by removing imperfections and adjusting to elements like contrast, saturation, and sharpness. Additionally, the task of curating a cohesive story emerges as the photographer sifts through hundreds or even thousands of shots to select the best images that tell the couple's unique narrative. This editing process requires creativity, technical expertise, and a keen artistic eye to fulfil the couple's individual vision. Given the many factors involved, it's no surprise that the transformation from raw captures to the final product takes time, allowing the photographs to reflect the couple's most cherished memories truly.
My Process:
When capturing the perfect moments of your special day, a wedding photographer's job doesn't end with clicking the shutter. Behind the scenes, an intricate and time-consuming process awaits – the editing of wedding photos. I know that each image is a priceless memory, so I dedicate careful attention to every detail during the editing process.
First, I meticulously review each photograph, selecting the best shots from thousands captured throughout the event. Sorting through these images can be arduous as we strive to curate a collection that genuinely narrates the story of your wedding day.
Next, I use skilled editing to bring your images to life. This process involves adjusting the exposure, colour balance, and contrast to ensure that your photos portray the true ambience and emotions of the moment they were taken. Sometimes, we enhance a romantic sunset, intensify the vibrant hues of a floral arrangement, or eliminate an unsightly distraction from the frame.
I apply a customized editing style that matches your unique wedding vision to achieve a consistent aesthetic. This attention to detail takes time as I refine each image, ensuring they harmonize and flow seamlessly when presented together. Moreover, I don't compromise on the quality of the final product. Each photo is meticulously examined for imperfections, removing blemishes or distractions that may detract from the beauty of the moment captured.
Lastly, I understand the significance of privacy. Before delivering your final wedding photos, I take the utmost care to safeguard your cherished memories. This involves securely storing and backing up your images, ensuring they remain protected throughout editing.
So, why does it take so long for a photographer to edit wedding photos? Because we want to ensure that every image we present reflects the love, joy, and beauty of your wedding day. With meticulous attention to detail, artistic vision, and a commitment to quality, I strive to create a collection of timeless photographs you and your loved ones will treasure for a lifetime.

5 questions to ask yourself before hiring a wedding photographer.
Planning a wedding involves making numerous decisions, and choosing the right photographer is one of the most important. To ensure you make the right choice, here are five essential questions to ask yourself before hiring a wedding photographer:
1. What is my preferred photography style? Wedding photographers specialize in various styles such as traditional, documentary, or artistic. Understanding the type of images you desire will help you find a photographer who aligns with your vision.
2. What is my budget for photography? Determining a realistic budget for wedding photography is crucial, as it will influence the quality, services, and experience level of the photographers you can consider. Clearly defining your budget will help narrow your options and streamline decision-making.
3. Do I connect with the photographer's portfolio? Reviewing a potential photographer's portfolio is essential. Pay attention to their creativity, composition, and ability to capture emotions. Look for photographers who have experience shooting weddings similar to your own vision, as this will give you confidence in their ability to encapsulate your special day.
4. What is their level of experience? Assessing a photographer's experience is essential to ensure you have a smooth and successful wedding day. Inquire about how many weddings they have shot, if they have worked at your chosen venue, and if they are knowledgeable about different lighting conditions. An experienced photographer will be better equipped to handle unforeseen scenarios and capture the best possible images.
5. Do they offer a wedding package that suits my needs? Each wedding photographer will have different packages with varying services and product offerings. Consider what is important to you, whether full-day coverage, a second photographer, or an album. Discuss your requirements with potential photographers to find one who can accommodate your needs and deliver your desired wedding photography experience.

from street photographer to wedding photographer.
From the bustling streets filled with the energy of daily life to the intimate moments that unfold during a wedding, my journey as a photographer has taken me on a transformative path. Evolving from the raw and candid realm of street photography to the beautifully orchestrated world of capturing love stories, I have learned to appreciate the beauty in both chaos and connection.
Through my experiences in street photography, I have honed my ability to anticipate fleeting moments, chasing after emotions that dance in the air. I have discovered the beauty that hides within the ordinary scenes of everyday life, seeking out unique compositions amidst the hustle and bustle of city streets.
However, transitioning to wedding photography has allowed me to embrace a different kind of beauty. It lies in the tenderness and vulnerability that exists within human connections. As a wedding photographer, I have come to understand the delicate balance of being both an observer and an active participant in the unfolding narrative of two souls joining together.
With each click of the shutter, I freeze not just a moment in time but an entire spectrum of emotions. I have become a storyteller, capturing the essence of joy, laughter, and tears that make each wedding day so cherished. It is an immense honour to document these precious memories, knowing that my images will be cherished for future generations.
I take great pride in creating timeless photographs that capture the unique spirit of each wedding, preserving the love and connection that radiates throughout the day. I sincerely hope that as couples look back on their wedding photographs, they will be transported back to the heartfelt moments that made their day so special. There is no greater joy for me than knowing I have played a part in creating memories that will be treasured for a lifetime.

my landscape photographer of the year highly commended photograph.
Earlier this year, I was very fortunate to win my first photography award, and it has absolutely nothing to do with wedding or commercial photography. It’s not even a landscape photo!
I have always admired the award winning images celebrated by the wonderful Landscape Photographer of the Year organisation. I first came across them, and perhaps you have too, at London Waterloo train station. The winning images are presented annually across several major train stations throughout the UK, including London Waterloo, London Bridge, Reading, Edinburgh, Manchester and so on. The photos are presented on large placards and its a wonderful public gallery. The chances are that if you frequent any of the major stations in the UK, you may have come across it. This is the schedule at the moment (2021-2022):
London Bridge 15 Nov – 9 Jan
Liverpool Street 10 Jan – 23 Jan
Leeds 24 Jan – 6 Feb
Edinburgh Waverley 7 Feb – 20 Feb
Manchester Piccadilly 21 Feb – 6 Mar
Birmingham New Street 7 Mar – 20 Mar
Reading 21 Mar – 3 Apr
Paddington 4 Apr – 17 Apr
Waterloo 18 Apr – 1 May
So at the moment, they are in Reading. If you are in the area, go check them out. If you live in London, check them out at the forthcoming stations.
On to my image, named Triangle Tree, was submitted to a sub-category called Urban Life. Within this category you find all sorts of images, but are mainly Street Photography styled images. You can check out the winning images within this category here (scroll down to see my image Triangle Tree. For the general winners, just click here.
I thought the standard of photography this year was incredible and huge congrats to all the winners! I am very proud and humbled to be one of the Highly Commended winners within the Urban Life category. It does help that the photo Triangle Tree is my favourite photo that I have taken. I consider it unique and is the main reason I love the image. I came across it in London Victoria. It struck my immediately and all I had to do was to wait until the golden hour came so I get that nice orange side light. I am incredibly fortunate to have come across it. This was during the days where I’d go in to central London and simply wander the streets hoping to find a good photograph. Thankfully, after endless hours and sore feet, I get my justification for it. Having said that, I would have done it anyway because I just loved doing it!
As well as my photo being presented in the major stations in the UK, it is also presented in the beautiful book Landscape Photographer of the Year. Go get a copy for yourself, if you like. I think I prefer seeing the image in a book rather than on a placard. The book will stay with my forever and, although I don’t want to look back too much, this will always be a proud moment for me. Lets hope there is more to come!
Finally, without further a do, here is the image itself:
What do you guys think?
Thanks so much for ready. This was a very “me” post but it was just something I wanted to talk about.
All the best
Colin
christian and loren - abergavenny, wales.
Non-traditional. Those are the weddings I love to photograph, and Christian and Lorens wedding was just that. The wedding didn’t take place in a church, but a self built tipi (incredibly crafted by Christian himself! Although he is an engineer, he deserves praise for this amazing structure!), and it was built in his mum and dad’s garden! The whole wedding day took place there and it was a stunning setting within the Welsh countryside.
The attention to detail was incredible and everything was crafted. It had a very personal touch with perhaps only the chairs that were outsourced.
It was a bit of a mission to get to. It was in Upper Llanover, just outside Abergavenny in South Wales. There were many winding single lane roads up steep hills to navigate before reaching a car park (which was a neighbours field). From there, a steep walk up another hill before reaching their parents house. It is extremely picturesque and made the journey well worth it.
On with the day, guests slowly arrived in their wonderful outfits. The theme was to dress in what you felt fabulous in. So, the range of colourful outfits were wonderful. It was a wonderfully sunny day, so everyone that arrived were in high spirits and smiling, which made my job as a wedding photographer very easy!
I couldn’t help to get a few photos of Christian and Lorens dog, an adorable rescue they adopted on their travels. If you have a dog at your wedding, I promise not to only photograph he or she, but I will give it love and attention too!
On to the ceremony, which again broke from tradition as the hymn was “Here comes the sun” by The Beatles. Christians friends Caz and Dave were the celebrants, and another friend Emma played the beautiful harp.
This wedding was all about friends and family. As so many of them were helping out with all the details of the wedding ceremony. Jenny made the Welsh cakes for the post ceremony. Grace made the cake. Beccy sculpted the giant silver cow (told you it was non-traditional!) and made the macarons. I can go on and on but my point is that this wedding wasn’t about hiring the best and professional out there, but more about family and friends helping out for the people that they love. It’s simply the type of wedding I love to be a guest at let alone photograph!
The ceremony was beautiful and full of tears, mostly by Loren, as she struggled to contain her emotions as she walked down the aisle. The couple exchanged vows and the rings were presented to them by their beautiful dog. It was really touching.
Remember I mentioned that Christian built this structure, well, it was a windy day, and during the ceremony, as they were exchanging wedding rings, a bit of wood fell onto a guest! Chrisitan and Loren looked back in horror but the guest was fine, thankfully! Now you may look at this moment as a disaster, but I look at these moments as the story of the wedding. Now, I am not saying I am glad the piece of wood fell on the guest, of course not. But it is these imperfect moments at weddings that create the story of the day! Weddings should be full of imperfect moments! Sure, preferably where nobody gets hurt! But my point is that if nothing memorable happens, your wedding will just be another, well, wedding. Don’t be afraid of those imperfect moments, just roll with it. Look at the hugs and laughs with the guests afterwards. These are the moments to remember.
Post ceremony, I had a bit of time alone with Christian and Loren to get those all important portrait shots. Being in the middle of the countryside, with hills and open space, it was great from a photographer’s point of view. The only downside was the very bright sunshine, which made things a challenge! From the off, they both said they were not the most comfortable when being photographed, but I thought they did really well and they both looked amazing.
Back to the tipi for food before the parents had a few words to say which was really touching and brought more tears from Loren. Next came the speeches from the best men which were hilarious. I struggled to keep my camera still as I tried to stop myself from giggling!
The party was now ready to begin and it was time for some line dancing! You really can’t beat a live band at the wedding. The energy from the music cannot be matched and to have a band that interacted with the guests so well is a bonus!
Finally, the night ended with some amazing fireworks!
why the photographer you chose matters.
I can’t take credit for this post. I read this from another blog post from the Fitness Influencer James Smith. Take a read:
Canon invited 6 photographers in to a big studio to take a photo of someone.
It was the same person for all 6 of the photographers, however they were all told different stories about who the person was.
To some, a self made millionaire, to others an alcoholic in recovery.
To one photographer, they said he saved someone's life, to another photographer they said he just got out of jail.
At the end of the day they lined up the portraits the photographers took to represent the person.
They were all vastly and incredibly different.
The incredible point Canon made was to show the world that it's not about the camera...
Because all 6 photographers used the exact same camera.
It was about the person behind the camera that made the difference, it was their perception of what and who was in front of them that determined how they took the shot.
You can see the article and images here.
I found this fascinating and made me think of how this relates to wedding photographers and for me, it makes me realise how important it is for wedding photographers to get to know their couples. There needs to be a good rapport and they need to be on the same wavelength with what sort of images they are looking for. Otherwise, you may end up with photos that do not resonate with your day and what you are like as a couple.
When a couple is interested in my work, we have a free consultation (more like a chat) and just get to know each other a little. This is a crucial part of knowing whether we would be a good match.
Take a look at my approach and see if this resonates with you.
how do you know if you are booking a "good" photographer?
One of the things I try to do as a wedding photographer is to imagine what a potential client is thinking when they are making their choice for a wedding photographer. There are so many out there, and the market is over saturated, so how on earth do you make that all important decision!?
Booking a good photographer is not just a task but an essential step in ensuring that the precious moments of your special day are flawlessly captured. In order to make the right choice, it is important to keep a few key factors in mind.
First and foremost, take the time to evaluate the photographer's portfolio. Look for consistent quality in their work, paying close attention to elements such as composition, lighting, and their ability to capture emotions. By doing so, you will be able to get a sense of their style and determine if it aligns with your vision for your wedding day.
The way I photograph weddings is to tell the story of the day. This is done in two ways - Documentary Style and Creative Style:
First, there is the documentary style, which is like “fly on the wall” photography, where I capture everything naturally. This enables me to photograph the true emotions of you and your guests and get all the laughs, cries, hugs, embarrassing moments, and general enjoyment of the day.
This involves me ensuring we get the best quality and the most beautiful photographs we can. Don’t worry, this doesn’t involve cringy poses that can make you feel uncomfortable. It goes as far as “just walk over there” or “try standing here” and using the best light and composition possible. See more about my approach.
In addition to assessing their portfolio, make it a point to read reviews and testimonials from past clients. This will provide valuable insights into the photographer's professionalism, reliability, and the level of satisfaction they have delivered. Positive feedback and recommendations are clear indicators of a good photographer. I have photographed some awesome couples and they have been so kind to leave me some lovely reviews:
“He captured every special moment. It was like he wasn’t even there as he wasn’t in your face and took so many natural shots. He gave us the freedom to just be us and enjoy our big day without having to stage pictures”.
“It was a pleasure to have Colin as our photographer on our special day. He is very accommodating, friendly, and discreet and he respected our requests. The final result was better than we had expected. We strongly recommend Colin”.
Natasa & Fotini
During the consultation process, carefully observe the photographer's communication skills. A good photographer will listen attentively to your ideas, preferences, and any specific requests you may have. Effective communication is key to ensuring that your photography needs are understood and met.
Furthermore, transparency about pricing and packages is crucial. It is important to have a clear understanding of their rates, any additional charges that may apply, and what is included in the packages offered. This will help you make an informed decision while considering your budget. If you’d like to see my rates, just head over here to get all the wedding info you need.
Lastly, inquire about the photographer's backup equipment and contingency plans for unforeseen circumstances. Technical failures can occur at any event, and it is important for a good photographer to be prepared with backup gear and have a plan in place. This will give you peace of mind knowing that they have contingencies in case of any unexpected situations. I have so many memory cards that are backed up as I take photos, giving my clients peace of mind. As soon as I am home, these are backed up twice and the hard drives are secured safely.
By taking into consideration these important factors, you can confidently make an informed decision when booking a good photographer who will beautifully document your special day. Remember, the memories they capture will be cherished for a lifetime, so investing in a skilled professional is truly invaluable.

fitness and wedding photography.
As a wedding photographer, our role goes beyond capturing stunning images. We are responsible for documenting moments, the joy and love shared by the couple and their guests. To fulfill these responsibilities effectively, being physically fit as a wedding photographer is of utmost importance. Not only does fitness contribute to our overall well-being, but it also directly impacts our ability to produce exceptional work. Here are several reasons why staying fit is crucial in our profession:
1. Stamina and Endurance
Wedding photography is a dynamic and demanding profession that requires us to be on our feet for hours on end. From the early morning preparations to the late-night festivities, we need to have the stamina and endurance to keep up with the fast-paced nature of a wedding day. Physical fitness enhances our energy levels, enabling us to be alert, focused, and able to capture every special moment, no matter how fleeting.
2. Flexibility and Agility
Wedding photography often involves shooting in varied environments, from outdoor ceremonies to crowded dance floors. Fitness enhances our flexibility and agility, enabling us to move seamlessly and capture the perfect shot from any angle. Being physically fit also helps us navigate challenging terrain, climb stairs, or crouch down for those intimate close-up shots, without getting fatigued or compromising our ability to capture the moment.
3. Creative Vision and Precision
Fitness not only benefits our physical abilities but also positively impacts our mental faculties. Regular exercise and a healthy lifestyle boost cognitive function, enhancing our creativity, focus, and problem-solving skills. A fit body promotes a fit mind, allowing us to think on our feet, adapt quickly to changing circumstances, and capture every fleeting expression or unexpected emotion that arises during a wedding day. It enables us to be organized, precise, and meticulous in our work.
4. Professional Appearance and Confidence
Apart from the technical aspects of our job, our physical appearance as photographers is an important consideration. A fit and healthy demeanor exudes professionalism and instills confidence in our clients. It demonstrates that we are committed to our craft, willing to go the extra mile, and dedicated to capturing their most cherished moments flawlessly. Our appearance reflects our passion and provides assurance that we will be able to deliver exceptional results.

why are wedding photographers expensive?
Weddings are momentous occasions that seek to encapsulate the essence of love, commitment, and pure joy. They become cherished memories, carrying sentimental value for a lifetime. In this digital era, wedding photography has become an art form, with skilled professionals lending their talent to create beautiful imagery. Some might argue that wedding photographers are expensive, but let us delve deeper into the intricacies of their craft and understand why their services command a substantial investment.
1. Expertise and Skill
Wedding photography is not a task anyone can accomplish with a simple smartphone camera. It requires years of dedicated practice, honing technical skills, and an eye for capturing the perfect shot. Professional photographers possess the knowledge of composition, lighting, posing, and editing techniques, ensuring that every single image is a masterpiece. Their expertise allows them to navigate challenging situations and produce breathtaking photographs in any setting or circumstance.
2. Cutting-Edge Equipment
To capture those unmissable candid moments, photographers invest in top-of-the-line cameras, lenses, and other essential equipment. These tools enable them to capture every detail, emotion, and expression with utmost precision and clarity. Moreover, professional photographers carry backup equipment, ensuring that no crucial moment is ever missed. The cost of acquiring and maintaining this equipment, along with the constant upgrades, is reflected in their pricing.
3. Extensive Pre-Wedding and Post-Processing Work
Behind every stunning photograph lies hours of meticulous planning, preparation, and editing. Prior to the wedding day, photographers conduct consultation sessions, scout locations, and understand the couple's vision to ensure every aspect is captured flawlessly. Even after the event, the post-processing work involves selecting and editing the best images, ensuring optimal color correction, retouching, and creating a beautiful final product that couples will treasure forever. The expertise and time invested in these activities contribute to the overall cost.
4. The Essence of Reliability
A professional wedding photographer is a reliable partner who doesn't just show up on time but is prepared for any situation. They possess the ability to adapt and thrive under pressure. They can manage large crowds, work seamlessly with other vendors, and understand the intricate flow of a wedding day. Their reliability ensures a stress-free experience, allowing the couple and their guests to focus solely on enjoying the day while the photographer captures every magical moment.
5. Preservation of Memories
Wedding photography is not just about capturing beautiful moments; it is about preserving memories that will last a lifetime. As a wedding photographer, my role goes beyond simply taking pictures; I become the storyteller who immortalizes the laughter, tears, and joyous celebrations of a couple's special day. Every photograph is a treasure, holding within it the power to transport the couple and their loved ones back to that moment in time. Through careful composition, lighting, and attention to detail, I strive to create images that evoke emotions and immortalize the essence of the couple's love story. The preservation of memories is at the heart of what I do, as I believe that every couple deserves to relive their wedding day and experience the emotions and beauty all over again, even as the years pass by.
how do you choose the right wedding photographer for you?
Choosing the right wedding photographer is a crucial decision when it comes to capturing one of the most important days of your life. With so many photographers to choose from, it's important to do your research and find someone who not only has a style that resonates with you but also possesses the technical expertise and creative vision to bring your wedding vision to life.
Look for a photographer who has a strong portfolio showcasing their ability to capture emotion and tell a story through their images. Meeting potential photographers in person or virtually is essential to gauge their personality and ensure they're a good fit for you and your partner.
Additionally, make sure to ask about their experience, approach to shooting weddings, and the packages they offer, including albums, prints, and digital files. carmen and kattuppa - wandsworth town hall, london.
This has to be one of the coolest weddings I have shot so far. The energy of the day was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it, apart from perhaps the boiling hot weather!
Carmen and Kutts got married at the beautiful Wandsworth Town Hall in London. They got married in The Grand Chamber, which as the name suggests, is the largest room available at Wandsworth Town Hall.
I have shot a wedding at this location before, for Barry and Sonia’s wedding, so thankfully I was completely familiar with the layout and potential shots. The grand staircase is a beautiful spot for photos immediately after the ceremony. It was a bright sunny day without a cloud in the sky, so the skylight in the grand hallway lit the scene beautifully for this occasion.
Following the ceremony, we headed to Clapham Common for what was my favourite part of the day. Guests arrived at an enclosed area under a nice and shady tree canopy where there were cushions and mini tables arranged on the grass, along with stunning decorations by the events company SimplyPartiesEvents. I absolutely loved their design. It was really simplistic, subtle but stylish. It had a festival vibe to it which I thought was brilliant for this setting. Anyone that knows Clapham Common, knows that it can be a very busy and loud common, but what the events company and Carmen and Kutts did made the reception feel private, intimate and beautiful. My hat goes off to them all!
The reception in Clapham Common included all the traditional wedding events, including a cake cutting, first dance and speeches. There was even a picnic arranged with the amazing good packages from Thyme & Date, which went down very well indeed!
The Common was also a surprisingly beautiful location to get some portrait shots with just the bride and groom. There are areas that can suggest that the couple is in the middle of a nature walk!
I love simple weddings and this is up there with the best of them. Lovely people, lovely location, lovely wedding. May they continue!
